The Book
I wanted to post something nice today and atone for my bad language yesterday.
Like so many people on WP I love to read. I don’t have a special kind of book I read, but I read mostly fiction.
When I was working, I did not find much time to read. After retiring reading was my first thought. I don’t own many books but make good use of the public library. Often I would just browse the shelves and grab a book because the spine looked interesting or the title looked interesting. And often I took a book because it was right at eye level and easy to reach. The check out period was for three weeks so I would get at least 15 books. I would lay them all out on the guest bed and then decide which one to start. I would usually have a book for outside on the patio, another in the living room and a third for the bedroom.
My days of at least eight hours of reading are no more since I have the computer. Plus my eyes tire more easily. But I still love the thought of reading.

When I saw this picture, I was reminded of the preparations I used to do to get ready to read. I would make sure all household duties were finished. Then get a snack or two and snuggle in a comfy chair. I did not want to be disturbed. I picked up the book, took a look and began to read.
Pillows fluffed
A comfy seat
Plate of fruit
A tasty treat
Morning sun
A warm repose
Meshed support
In vase a rose
Time to look
At the book
There is nothing like reading hardcopy, though online reading has its own advantages. Who is fav author?
I really don’t have a favorite author that I can think of. I have read some books by the same author and felt really let down.
These books I have liked.
The Forsyte Saga….the entire set
The Mill on the Floss and anything by George Eliot
Passage to India
The Raj Quartet all volumes
John Updike’s Rabbit series
Bernard Cornwell Sharpe Series
I mention those because I have read them more than once and could reread again.
I have read some books and put them aside to be returned to the library. When I pick them up a few days later, I look at the cover and think:
What was this book about? lol
I’ve read a lot of those kind of books…….and regretted the waste of time.
I’m going over to Meme’a blog… She plays the ukuguitar and has tea and coffee, and chases unfaithful followers…
Sure, comfy chair and books… And what have you done with the butterflies? I am missing a couple of days and that’s what I find?
Look what you’ve done to Katrina! She wants to lazy! I have to send Meme over with the broomstick…
My eyes are red of fury:-D
I noticed you have been freeloading over at Meme’s. Grabbing all the tea and coffee. You have the liberty to come here for sophisticated reading or go there for silly songs.
Your choice.
No house is home without books. Lots of them!
I liked the quick pace of your poem, as if you were in a hurry to start reading, checking all the essentials before sitting down. Loved the watercolor too.
Doesn’t take me very long to get to the first page.
That picture was of the same stock as the Sunny Day one. Both were happy looking.
reading is reading no matter what form it takes. So enjoy…
Indeed you are right. I read any kind of bs I can get my hands on. Find a lot of it sitting around in doctor and dentist offices.
Wow….You’re household duties were finished??!! I wonder what THAT feels like! lol! I love to read, too, but trying to read almost instantly puts me to sleep! I have recently started listening to audio books. That helps, somewhat, but it isn’t as charming as holding a book in my hands and savoring every page.
I love holding the books too. If I notice a well worn book in the library, I know it must be a good one and it goes in my checkout bag.
Thanks for your comment.
Snowstorm on the way, here ….. perfect time to curl up and read!!
Reading a book and eating black-eyed pea soup are my favorite things to do.
I hope you have a good supply of both.
Oh yes, this is me too! And I also have neglected the reading of books recently, but there is enough to read on WordPress and then writing – I’ve had enough by then, too much eye strain from the glowing computer screen! There is one book I’m really looking forward to reading, called the Piano Cemetery, got some good prose in that one, but I’m struggling to get back to it!
I looked up the Piano Cemetery. It seems a really interesting book to read.
Yes, the strain on eyes is bad from the screen. By the time I am ready to settle down to a book in the evening…….I just want to close my eyes.
I only ever read one book at a time! And usually I can tell by the cover whether or not it will be my type of book
Being on the computer so much has limited my reading to one book at a time too. And sometimes I don’t read my book for days.
Yes, a cover can be very convincing. Just like the packaging of a loaf of bread. lol
I pick up some books when I think that have the book cover that suit my taste, then I read where the tone of writing suit my moods. I am very emotional in choosing a book.
KC
I agree reading and choosing a book is emotional.
And the arrangement of words…….just words…….on a page of a book can really get our emotions moving.
I liked you yesterday
Oh, thank you.
Tempest in a Teapot……or Much ado about Nothing
I have been on a computer for years – at work, during my studies etc. my eyes were so tired and the words started to blur. I have found that audio books have given me back my reading. My favourite place is the public library. They have a vast amount of audiobooks – nonfiction and fiction alike. I spoke to the librarian who is in the acquisition department. They are focusing on audiobooks because of the growing demand. Reading is a important part of my life!!!
Yes, I enjoy listening too. I will check out the book along with the tape (they used to be on tape with the tape recorder…lol )
I like to read along as I listen. Of course you can’t be doing anything else then.
Do people read out loud to each other any more?
I think it would be nice to belong to a little group who would take turns reading a book aloud. And we would have coffee and dessert and then gossip a little bit. We wouldn’t discuss the book and dissect it to pieces. Just enjoy reading together.
If you could just share some of those reading hours with me, our friendship will increase threefold.
When I want to read, I play some classical music in the background, sit comfortably and then we go to the world only books can transport you to.
I can’t imagine living in a world without reading. And I mean any kind of reading. It is just all around us.
I don’t do any of that Texting stuff…….don’t even know what it is.
I like a book of real words.
I pick out books same way you do, though I tend toward poetry and nonfiction…a book in every room and even on my computer.
When I am in the library I even ask somebody who is scanning the shelves what they are reading and have found good books that way.
I rarely read fiction from the BEST SELLER LIST. Usually disappointed.
Thanks for the comment!
